Stepping Stones
Design: David Murray
Date: 1983

This typeface designed by David Murray was awarded a prize in the 1st International Design Competition, Osaka. Murray, then a lecturer at Swinburne Institute of Technology, was awarded the Mayor’s Prize (Osaka) for his Stepping Stones, modular letter shapes. The official announcement stated, ‘This system of 14 interrelated shapes is designed as a form of creative play and as a tool to develop the perception of letterforms (for other alphabets as well as Roman). Made of die-cut magnetic material bonded to coloured PVC film, the shapes are large enough to be confidently manipulated by small hands which assists the development of manual dexterity’.
