The Reserve Bank of Australia, a central bank established by the Australian Government, became a reality on 14 January 1960. Dr HC (Nugget) Coombs, Governor of the Commonwealth Bank since 1949, was appointed the RBA’s first Governor. Gordon Andrews was chosen to design the bank’s new identity, and his abstract symbol has proved to be enduring – it is still in use today. Andrews would work with the Reserve Bank on many projects for the next two decades.
