National Athletics
Stadium Canberra
Design: Gordon Andrews
Date: 1977

Gordon Andrews designed this comprehensive wayfinding and environmental graphics scheme in close collaboration with the stadium architects, Philip Cox & Partners. Their brief was ‘to design a system to move spectators from the entrance gates to their seats in a simple manner without causing confusion’. Andrews delivered a comprehensive, co-ordinated response encompassing coded tickets, seat signage, sculptural arrows and super graphics. His designs were unified by an abstract reference to athletics, featuring bold forms in bright, strong colours to contrast against the severe, concrete structure.
