This remarkable, beautifully restrained book is the combined output of Alison Forbes, Paul Cox and Ulli Beier. Paul Cox (1940–>2016) was a highly respected Dutch-Australian film-maker, and an exceptional documentary photographer. Home of Man was written by Horst Ulrich Beier, known as Ulli Beier, a German Jewish editor, writer and scholar, who had a pioneering role in developing literature, drama and poetry in Papua New Guinea. Alison Forbes is arguably Australia’s greatest book designer, and Home of Man is one of her finest moments. Her work is characterised by meticulous, rigourous manipulation of typography and illustrative content, and this book is a perfect example of her belief that ‘if everything works, you don’t even know the designer has been around’.
